Abstract

Art can foster the development of citizenship in education. Within the scope of artistic knowledge, attributes from different areas, rich in information, such as the Plastic Arts, are recognized. In this particular case, Abstract Painting and Dance enable the expansion of various skills and intersecting experiences, where the creative dimension and conception of artistic objects are possible, and where the concepts of Culture and Citizenship from two realities can be associated.

In the context of a professional internship developed in the 2020/2021 academic year, as part of the Master’s in Dance Teaching, at the Escola Superior de Dança, of the Polytechnic Institute of Lisbon, a study was carried out aimed at deepening knowledge and skills in the choreographic composition process This study took as its starting point a visual stimulus – different works by plastic artists of abstract art – for which a project was designed for the students of the Professional Course of Contemporary Dance.

The work was grounded in the paradigm of the qualitative methodological approach and founded on the principles of action research. The specific artistic works were the focal point of the project, and the sharing of values and skills was crucial in this project. This facilitated the students’ decision-making process, fostering the development of a capacity for responsible, civic and active participation, resulting in an Artistic Dance Product.
