aTERRAr: Possibilities for dance creation in the face of the socio-environmental challenges of the Anthropocene

Abstract

This article presents reflections on the contributions of dance to the socio-environmental challenges of the Anthropocene, with a particular focus on the dissemination of the knowledge involved. The object of study is the conception of the performance “aTERRAr: What if we stopped being human?”, created as a lecture-performance—a hybrid scenic-scientific genre that is both didactic and artistic nature—aiming to develop other ways of presenting urgent contemporary issues. The adopted starting point is the interaction between different fields of knowledge, grounded in a transdisciplinary dialog that embraces the practice of the ecology of knowledge, without hierarchy among different forms of knowing. The article concludes that dance, like other performing arts, can contribute to addressing the challenges of the Anthropocene by proposing different proposals and ways of presenting the issues of this epoch. The creation of artivist works, through different strategies, can provoke public interest in the topic, foster a sensitive engagement with the issues, stimulate critical thinking and call for action.
